New Life

You caught me unaware
all of a sudden
I found myself happy
In a flash you were there
when I'd quite forgotten
life don't have to be crappy

For a time I drifted
through dark and despair
only trying to survive
then the mists gently lifted
and I surfaced for air
discovered being alive

I didn't realize
just what it would mean
to be appreciated
'til I broke through the ice
looking back where I'd been
so nearly suffocated.
